Botox

Botulinum toxin is manufactured by several companies and contains a highly purified derivative of the protein botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin was initially used in mainstream medicine where its applications continue to expand rapidly.

In the beauty world botulinum toxin is administered through a series of small injections to selected muscles, relaxing them and resulting in decreased muscle activity. This leads to a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and helps to prevent ageing as well as treat the results of it. As a result it gives a more youthful appearance.

The results usually last 3-4 months although we have clients in whom it lasts a lot longer. Botulinum toxin is often used in conjunction with other anti-ageing treatments.

We also offer botulinum toxin for the treatment of underarm sweating, you can read more about this on our treatments page here.

Dermal Fillers

The skin is made up of layers. The (usually) thin outer layer is called the epidermis. Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis which is up to 20 times thicker than the epidermis. It is into the dermis, at varying levels, that dermal fillers are injected. They may also be injected at a much deeper level (even down to bone) during a Soft Tissue Face Lift. The sub-cutaneous skin layer lies beneath the dermis. See diagram below.

Dermal Fillers Kent

Dermal fillers are used to plump out or soften facial lines and wrinkles. They may also be used to replace lost volume, define facial contours and to create fuller lips. Dermal fillers are now at the forefront of anti-ageing procedures and in many cases have taken over from surgery in improving facial definition. We do not use permanent fillers as these can cause long term problems. Our fillers however do stimulate the skin to produce its own collagen giving the appearance of “growing younger”.

The Stepback clinic uses a variety of different fillers for different applications. We use hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a natural filler in the body. It has been used in other branches of medicine for quite some time. Examples of hyaluronic acid fillers include the Restylane products by the Swedish company Qmed or the Teosyal products from the Swiss company Teoxane. We also use Radiesse, a filler made from calcium hydroxyapatite by Merz Pharmaceuticals.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy improves skin quality. It consists of tiny injections into the superficial skin. Most people do not need any anaesthetic for this and do not find it uncomfortable. At Stepback we are happy to apply anaesthetic cream to the areas you wish to be treated if you would like this option. The injections contain a mixture of hyaluraonic acid along with vitamins, amino acids, minerals, co-enzymes and nucleic acids. The density of the injected formula is just a bit thicker than water.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is found throughout the skin. It is responsible for hydration of the skin and increases the production of collagen. It is essential for younger looking skin.

Vitamins

The vitamins included in our Mesotherapy act in a number of way by improving skin density and working on the metabolism of the skin as well as causing collagen production and decreasing dark patch formation.

Amino Acids

These are important in the formation of collagen and act on the elasticity of the skin

Minerals

Minerals improve the cell function of the skin.

Co-enzymes

These increase the cell turnover and thus the formation of skin cells getting rid of dull skin.

Nucleic Acids

Are important for the formation of skin proteins and thus are necessary for rejuvenation.

Anti-Oxidants

These stop skin damage for example by the sun and the environment.

How many treatments are needed?

Initially 5 treatments are advised with a 2 week interval between the first, second and third treatments. The interval between the third and the fourth and the fourth and the fifth treatments is usually one month. Following this initial course of 5 it is recommended to repeat the treatment twice a year.

Which areas can be treated?

Basically any area of the body can benefit from Mesotherapy. In our clinic we use it for the face, neck and décolleté, areas of cellulite and the scalp where it helps to improve the quality of hair and to prevent/reduce the onset of male patterned balding which can occur not only in men but also in women.

Soft Tissue Face Lifting

We are very pleased to be able to offer a wonderful non- surgical facelift which we have developed ourselves. With this we can disguise eye bags, add volume to cheeks and put back the volume lost as one gets older. We can make lips more luscious (without the trout pout!) and open eyes. Jowls may disappear. It takes between one and two hours to do and is long-lasting. The face lift starts at £650 and many of our clients say that it has saved them having a surgical procedure.

Stepback is one of the few clinics to offer total liquid face lifts. We insert small tubes called cannulas under the skin through which we introduce a variety of fillers to replace loss of volume in all the areas which require treatment. This is a painless process as we use local anaesthetic in the areas where we insert the cannulas. There is very little bruising.

For more information on cannulas and the treatment please visit Restylane.

Skin Boosting/Hydration Injections

Skin boosting injections consist of hyaluronic acid. Their intended use is to restore skin hydration, improve the skin structure and also the elasticity of the skin thus skin boosters provide a highly effective solution for overall skin rejuvenation. They are indicated for the face, neck, décolletage and backs of the hands. Despite being made of the same substance as fillers they are not true fillers since they are injected at intervals all over the area to be treated rather than into a specific wrinkle or fold. They are injected into the deep skin. Three treatments four weeks apart are recommended followed by a twice a year treatment although some individuals may require more.

Chemical Skin Peels

Chemical peeling involves the application of a chemical solution to the surface of the skin to produce careful removal of it’s outer layers. The amount of skin removed depends on the type of chemical used, the strength of the product and how long it is left in contact with the skin. Chemical peels are usually described according to how deep they work on the skin.

Superficial Peels

Removes the outer layer of skin known as the epidermis.

Medium Depth Peels

Removes both the epidermis and the underlying upper dermal layers.

Deep Peels

Remove the lower dermal layers of the skin. These may be quite uncomfortable requiring some sedation and have a higher risk of side effects. Stepback does not offer deep peels.

Chemical peels can be used on most parts of the body but the commonest use is to improve the skin on the face, neck, décolleté and the backs of the hands. Examples of problems treatable by peels are wrinkling, age spots/pigmentation, sun damage and acne marks. Chemicals peels cannot improve loose skin or deal with deep scarring. It is not possible to remove the skin’s pores although they may be refined.

After the peel process the skin tightens and a few days (usually 5-7) later it begins to flake. There is no downtime from our peels.

What Happens During A Peel?

The skin is cleansed and then the peel is painted on and left for a variable amount of time, usually a few minutes. The face may feel hot whilst the peel is on. The peel is removed and some aftercare products are applied.

Aftercare

It is very important that a high factor sun cream should be worn after the peel to avoid pigmentation from UV light. The therapist or Doctor may advise individually on skin care after the procedure and we are able to prescribe a skin care package for most skins. Mild pain relief may be necessary for example paracetamol and if itching occurs an anti histamine may be taken. Strenuous exercise must be avoided and scratching of the skin to stop the risk of scarring.

At Stepback we offer a 'Doctors Peel':

This peel has 70% Glycolic Acid and refines the top layers of the skin and the dermis.

It is advised that one should have a course of peels to get the best result.

Dermaroller/Skin Needling

Skin needling is also known as “collagen induction therapy”. It is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself when damaged. Skin needling allows the skin to self-repair by triggering new collagen formation without causing scarring. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin with reduced wrinkle depth and increased elasticity along with an improvement in the appearance of scars, pigmentation and other skin flaws. It can be used on most areas of the body.

Visible signs of skin rejuvenation are seen after just 6-8 weeks following a procedure and continue to improve for up to a year. A course of 3 needling sessions at 6-8 weeks apart is advised. Skin needling works on the following problems:

Ageing Skin

Restores skin firmness and tightness. Thickens the dermis. Helps smooth away wrinkles, lines, folds and crows feet. Improves skin Texture.

Scars

Reduces the appearance of indented acne scars and pits. Improves chickenpox scars. Helps to relax old scars. Helps to fill old surgical scars.

Pigmentation

Dermaroller can improve pigmentation from UV light, hormonal changes or post inflammatory pigmentation due to acne or other skin disorders.

Stretch Marks And Cellulite

Improves the appearance of both.

During the procedure the skin is covered with anesthetic cream and when this has taken effect a roller covered in small needles is rolled over the problem area in sections until redness is achieved. After the procedure the face looks “sunburned” for a few hours but soon returns to normal.

Aftercare

The Doctor may prescribe some homecare products and a home dermaroller which is less invasive than the Dermaroller used at the clinic.

Medical Skincare/ Cosmeceuticals

Cosmeceuticals are cosmetics which have some medical pharmaceutical action. A better understanding of skin physiology, coupled with an advancement in raw materials and finished formulations, have allowed the development of topical (directly applied) agents used to improve the appearance of a specific medical condition or the ageing face.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acids, vitamin anti-oxidants, sun protectors and retinoid products are just some of the active ingredients in our Cosmeceuticals.

Stepback uses Cosmeceuticals by a variety of manufacturers including Jan Marini Skin Research, Skin Ceuticals, ZO Skin Health, DCL and Medik8 products. For most of our customers Cosmeceuticals are used for home care in place of the usual cleansers, toners and moisturisers to dramatically improve and maintain the condition of the skin. We will recommend them routinely with the use of home Dermarollers.

At Stepback, we believe that if you are going to spend money on anti-ageing you should also invest in good, pharmaceutically active skincare. We would advise that some internet sites may be selling false replicas. With Stepback you can be sure that you are getting properly formulated products. The cost of our skincare compares favorably with that of the main skincare houses available in large department stores.

Non Surgical nose Shaping And Lifting

It is not uncommon for people to be unhappy with their noses. Some may acquire a deformity of their noses due to trauma others may simply dislike their nose simply because they were born with it and it represents their normal racial features. Unfortunately some other people may be born with a facial deformity. At Stepback we aim to balance the nose using soft tissue filling and botox.

Fillers may be used to alter the angle of the nose with the forehead, to straighten the dorsal areas of the nose (see image below) and to alter the tip if necessary.

Botox may be used to help elevate the tip or alter the width of the nostrils.

It is becoming more common in some races to request alteration of their normal nose features.

Minor Operations Clinic

Both Dr Christopher Davies and Dr Geraldine McKeever have performed minor skin operations for many years in their roles as GPs who need to be specially approved to perform such procedures. In recent years the NHS has decided not to offer treatment for skin problems which are deemed to be purely cosmetic.

We at Stepback recognise that unsightly cosmetic skin problems can, nonetheless, be very distressing for the individual. We are able to remove lumps, bumps, moles, skin tags etc. using a variety of methods.

All our minor operation procedures are carried out in state of the art, NHS approved, facilities.

Semi-permanent make up is an exciting cosmetic treatment in which carefully applied pigment is placed in the dermal layer of the skin. Eyeliner

A fine line can be applied to add depth and definition to eyes. This also gives the impression of thicker lashes with enhanced colour.

Eyebrows

For eye brows which are sparse from plucking, naturally thin or light, semi-permanent make up can add depth and definition.

Lip Colour

Lip liner and full lip colour can reshape lips and increase fullness. It can prevent lipstick from bleeding. You can choose a colour, either subtle or dramatic, to suit your lifestyle.

Medical Problems

The Stepback Clinic uses semi-permanent make up to mask blemishes and discolourations of the skin, to hide scars and to replace pigment loss in conditions such as vitiligo.

What the Celebrities say

Dr Christopher Davies and Dr. Geraldine M Keever have been described as “Kent’s King and Queen of faces”.

Sarah Jagger, Daybreak TV beauty presenter and red carpet makeup artist has said of Dr. McKeever: “I have seen Geraldine’s work and I’m amazed at how she can create a fuller cheekbone, a higher brow, a sharper jawline all with the use of Botulinum Toxin and Fillers and without leaving patients looking like they’ve had “something done”. I would say to anyone thinking of having a facelift to rethink and to go to Geraldine instead”
